Situated south of Saddleback Mountain, overlooking Gerringong and Werri Beach, Curry’s Mountain Estate is one of the Illawarra’s great sustainability success stories.
After decades as a working dairy farm, the owners began a bold transformation in 2000, planting an arboretum of local rainforest species. Over time, paddocks of kikuyu were gradually replaced with native rainforest, turning the property into a model of sustainable farming and conservation. Today, it serves as a valued place for local education and research.
Landcare Illawarra’s Project Officer, Richard Scarborough, advised on the early plantings and, in 2008, worked with the owners to establish a native plant nursery. That nursery now supplies hundreds of plants each year to the local bush regeneration sector, supporting ecological restoration across the region.
In 2016, the owners planted their first crop of finger limes (Citrus australasica). The orchard has since expanded to include numerous varieties. Curry’s Mountain Estate now supplies finger limes to local restaurants and caterers, and regularly sells its produce at local markets.
In 2025, Landcare Illawarra celebrated its 25th anniversary with a birthday gathering at the property. Estate Manager Andrew McNeil, who has been dedicated to Curry’s Mountain for many years, will share insights in the Farm and Flourish series about the Estate’s ongoing commitment to sustainable farming and its strong partnership with Landcare Illawarra.
This talk is part of our Farm & Flourish event series at Gerringong Library, celebrating the farming community in our local area.
