Ryerson Index

The Ryerson Index is a free index to death notices that appear in Australian newspapers, edited by volunteers around Australia. The earliest paper included is the Sydney Gazette, from 1803, and the index covers right up until the present.

The index includes funeral notices, some probates notices and obituaries. It is only an index, however, so you then have to access the full detailed record from another source.

The Ryerson Index has now started indexing digital newspapers (in addition to printed newspapers) and funeral director’s websites. Digital newspapers are identified by the standard name unique to each publisher, News Corp papers are identified as 'News Corp Digital Notices'. Funeral director notices are identified under the funeral director’s name with a link to their website.

Australian Cemeteries Index

The Australian Cemeteries Index is a website run by volunteers from around Australia. It provides photos of headstones and inscriptions of thousands of Australian graves.

The record contains information such as:

  • Name of person buried
  • Birth and death dates
  • Age
  • Additional family member details, where possible
  • Cemetery name
  • Location of the plot
  • Photo of the headstone

(Not all this information is always recorded.)
