New South Wales

NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages offers unrestricted searching with no identification required for:

  • Births over 100 years ago
  • Deaths over 30 years ago
  • Marriages over 50 years ago

These records of births, deaths and marriages in NSW date from 1856.

Early church records were recorded in parish registers from 1788 to 1855. Churches didn’t record as much information as the government did after 1856. Church records can be found on microfilms, some of which are accessible in the Kiama Family History Centre for pre-1856.

The Kiama Family History Centre can purchase the certificates for you through a Transcription Agent.

If you are unable to find information about your Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ancestors using the regular resources, then you can make contact with AIATSIS (Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies).

AIATSIS have put together a range of online guides and resources to help you get started, and they also provide a number you can call to get assistance.

United Kingdom

The General Register Office (GRO) can supply you with birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership and death certificates. GRO has all the records registered in England and Wales from July 1837. For records pre-1837, you will need to look through Parish records. You can search these through Ancestry, Findmypast and Familysearch websites. The further back you go, the less success you are likely to have with retrieving records, as very old records may have been destroyed, lost or damaged.

You can search for records and get the index reference numbers using the Free BDM website.

The Kiama Family History Centre can order these records for you.

General Register Office Northern Ireland (GRONI) has records from Northern Ireland.
