Next date: Saturday, 20 September 2025 | 12:00 PM to Wednesday, 24 September 2025 | 03:00 PM

Candace Gabelish concept image for Pearl Perfumery exhibition

'Ekphrasis' is an Ancient Greek word meaning a creative, vivid, written description of a visual work of art. The more contemporary interpretation of ekphrasis, explored in this exhibition, is that any art form can inspire the creation of an entirely different type of art.

Art doesn’t just entertain, it moves. The art chosen has moved Candace Gabelish (perfumer) and Emma Medwell (artist) to create. Perfumes, sculpture and paintings exhibited in this collaboration originated from their emotional responses to a variety of artforms, including writing, painting, poetry and music.

With this concept in mind, the public will be invited to be part of the art. There will be a variety of ways for individuals to respond to the ekphrastic art.

Candace Gabelish

Candace Gabelish is a scientist turned perfumer who has been creating unique fragrances since 2009. 'Inspiration can come from anywhere,' she claims but her main muses are people, colour, art and artists. Candace is looking forward to more exciting collaborations: 'art moves us!'

Emma Medwell

Emma Medwell is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture, woodwork, and mixed media. Drawing inspiration from place, history, and human connection, she creates works that explore form, texture, and narrative. Her recent practice includes explorations in perfumery-inspired art collaborations and large-scale exhibitions.
