A place of plenty

A local Aboriginal meaning of Minnamurra is 'place of fish'. Many birds, reptiles, mammals and aquatic species depend on this natural area for food and shelter.

Minnamurra Wetland has State environmental significance and is surrounded by a great diversity of habitat types including:

  • Endangered ecological communities such as Illawarra subtropical/littorial rainforest, swamp oak floodplain forest and coastal saltmarsh.
  • Mangroves and a tidal estuary.

A major threat to these habitats is weeds which compete for space, light, soil nutrients and water.

This plaque is one of many found around the district. The plaques describe the history of their locations. They were commissioned by Kiama Council in 2009.

If you had seen them around, you are welcome to have a look at the collection of plaques in the district.
