Farquharson Brothers

Farquharson brothers

Sergeant Walter Farquharson of the 19th Battalion, was a Post Office official from Kiama.

Walter embarked with the rank of Corporal with the 2nd Reinforcements from Sydney on HMAT Kanowna on 19 June 1915. He was later promoted to Sergeant.

In May 1917, Walter was reported as missing in action, but a later Court of Enquiry determined that he had been killed in action on 3 May 1917. He was 25 years old. Walter is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.

Walter's younger brother, Frank Farquharson of the 33rd Battalion, was a draper from Kiama.

When he turned 18, in 1917, Frank enlisted as a Private and embarked with the 14th Reinforcements, 30th Battalion, from Sydney on HMAT Marathon on 10 May 1917 - a week to the day after his older brother died, although he would not have been aware of this at the time.

Later transferring to the 33rd Battalion, on 31 August 1918 he, too, died of wounds, which he received in action. Frank was 19 years old. Frank was buried in the Daours Communal Cemetery Extension, France.
