The Kiama 'New Brighton Hotel' has a long history. In 1859 the Kiama Hotel (a single storey weatherboard inn) located on Market Square,Terralong Street. It was bought by the George Adams who established the famous Tattersall Sweeps. In 1862 Adams changed the name of the hotel to the 'Steam Packet Inn'. The Steam Packet held it's own horse racing sweeps during this period. The Steam Packet Inn was demolished in the late 1880s and a grand 2 storey tourist hotel was built and later called the 'Brighton Hotel' in 1889, by John McCaffrey. It was around this time that the distinctive end towers were added (which would have matched the nearby Post Office tower). Fifty years later, during renovations in the 1940s, builders dismantled the end towers and uncovered the old signboards with 'Steam Packet Inn' in sign-writing. The New Brighton Hotel closed in 1980 and was demolished to build the current building.
