As early as 1825, the present-day golf course formed part of the Eureka estate dairy farm before it was subdivided into a smaller property bequeathed to the Boyd family. The cow paddock enjoyed brief notoriety as the Monkey Flat race course before Cyril Boyd, a keen golf enthusiast, built several rough golf holes among the cows.
When the original Kiama Golf Course (est. 1903) had to move from its site above Kendall's Beach - due to stray bullets from the nearby rifle range - Boyd offered his cow paddock to the club. Boyd continued to graze his cattle (which kept the grass down on the fairways), so the greens were fenced off with barbed wire.
In 1933/34 the course was remodelled into a 9-hole golf course (still with cows), and in the late 1950s, the 64 acres were converted into the 18-hole course we know today. In 1964 the land was purchased by the club from the Boyd family.
