Hindmarsh Park
Located in the centre of town, Hindmarsh Park has always played a significant role in Kiama, and it has had many faces over the years.
In the early years of settlement, the park was a water reserve for the township. In 1898, a group of local men requested to the Minister for Lands, that the land be rededicated as a public park.
From 1899 until 1906, the water reserve in the park was drained and filled with rubbish and quarry spoil. In 1906, two tennis courts were built in 'Central Park'. A Tennis Clubhouse was erected in 1959 alongside Terralong Street, overlooking the courts.
The name changed from Central Park to Hindmarsh Park in 1967 to honour the Hindmarsh family. The tennis courts and clubhouse were dismantled in 1988, so the park could be wholly a space for gatherings of the township.
We have some of the old photos of the park along with some of the concept designs that are being suggested for the upgrade.
