National Novel Writing Month workshops 2025

Throughout the month of November we're running a series of workshops at Kiama and Gerringong libraries designed to inspire and motivate your writing journey.
 
From how to get started with your writing, to understanding the writing process, developing outlines for crime writing, and crafting stories for any medium, dive into the wonderful world of writing at the library!

  • Maria Lewis: Crafting stories for any medium (7 November, Gerringong Library)
  • Dave Warner: Crime - developing outlines (14 November, Kiama Library)
  • Maggie Dent: Understanding the writing process (21 November, Gerringong Library)
  • Emma Darragh: Story starters (28 November, Kiama Library)

 

Cost

Adult 15+: $30 per session or $110 for all sessions

All materials and tea and coffee are provided.

Maria Lewis: Crafting stories for any medium

In this workshop, Maria Lewis will discuss how to craft stories across a range of mediums, including tips and tricks to help you tell whatever story you’re interested in, whether that’s a novel, short story, novella, podcast, film, feature article, and more.

Dave Warner: Crime - developing outlines

In this interactive workshop, Dave Warner will introduce categories of crime-writing, along with its inspiration and approach. Then attendees will simultaneously develop two different styles of crime novel outlines with Dave, in a collective exercise with everyone free to toss ideas into the fire to form the bare bones of several crime novels.

Emma Darragh: Story starters

This interactive workshop is designed to kickstart your creativity. By completing a series of timed writing exercises, you’ll discover new ideas and experiment with language, voice and form. You’ll take inspiration from your own life as well as from external stimuli, with writing exercises to support your learning.

About NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month)

National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) began in 1999 as a daunting but straightforward challenge: to write 50,000 words of a novel in thirty days. Now, each year on 1 November, hundreds of thousands of people around the world begin to write, determined to end the month with 50,000 words of a brand new novel.

This year Kiama and Gerringong Libraries will host four published local authors in a series of workshops designed to inspire and support you, wherever you are on your writing journey.
