Of the 200 vessels that traded from Kiama Harbour, between 1820 and 1963 (when commercial shipping ceased), almost half were shipwrecked on the New South Wales coastline.
The rocky coastline, coupled with unpredictable weather conditions claimed most of these vessels. Rockets with lines attached were fired out to ships in distress. If a line could be attached, this could pull out a rescue line for those aboard. Training was supervised by the Pilot.
